Product Development from Start to Success

FAQs

frequently asked questions

What is the advantage of outsourcing product development and engineering services?

Typically, product development schedules are driven by market demand or revenue goals. Most companies have more projects than their current engineers can handle given the pressure to deliver right away. By outsourcing their product development, companies gain third-party perspective, vision and experience, increased project accountability and a way to design and deliver a project on schedule. By outsourcing to Paragon Innovations, companies benefit from our extensive experience in embedded system development and time-tested process to deliver high-reliability boards that work the first time and are normally production ready within two spins.

At what point in the development process should you engage an outsource engineering firm?

Ideallly, outsourced engineering includes the entire product development process from initial product concepts and early feature set identification to a complete documentation package ready for manufacturing. Outsourced engineering is not limited to schematic capture and software development. It is a much broader collection of services. To receive the maximum benefit of your outsourced partner, involve them in the very early steps of your new product.

What should you look for when choosing an engineering partner?

It is paramount to review the proposed outsourcing partner's written engineering process standards and understand who owns the intellectual property (IP). At Paragon, our customers gain all IP rights, unless negotiated otherwise. We provide the IP in terms of the product developed, as well as step-by-step documentation so the IP never walks away, even if project leaders or team members do. When choosing a partner, you also should review samples of project documentation from projects completed by the provider. Additionally, you should meet with the staff that might be assigned to your project and determine how they typically communicate their progress. Does the provider have formal status reporting, email, and videophone capability? It is easy for a provider to answer yes to all of these questions, the question is - can they prove it?

Who owns your design?

You do. As the customer, you gain all IP rights. Paragon not only provides the IP in terms of the product developed, but also offers step-by-step documentation so the IP never walks away, even if project leaders or team members do. At Paragon, client-owned IP is our standard practice and it is a critical tenant of our business.

How long does a typical project take and how much does it cost?

The variables of a "typical" project are vast, meaning there really is no typical project. We welcome a discussion about your project to determine how Paragon can best serve your development needs. We can provide estimates of time and budget on your project once we have a good understanding of your requirements.

What should I be worried about?

Hardware development is like navigating a minefield. There are many things to worry about from changing technologies, parts availability, manufacturing costs, protection of intellectual property, copyright infringement, bugs, mistakes, errors, hitting the right market, and getting to market at the right time, just to name a few. With nearly three deecades of product development experience, Paragon Innovations can help you navigate this minefield and come out on top where others have made fatal mistakes.

How do I know who to trust?

Trust is the most important aspect of any relationship. This is no different between a client and a service provider. Paragon Innovations works hard to maintain the trust of our clients. We live by our core tenants and actively practice integrity and courage. We have the integrity to be straight forward with all aspects of the project and the courage to do what's right, even in the toughest of situations.

What is Paragon's development approach?

Paragon has a tiered product development process that aims at meeting its customers requirements at whatever stage of development they are in. We can support anything from a proof of concept device all the way to our Big Bertha plan for medical device development and FDA approval. Contact us if you'd like to discuss what we can do to meet your project goals.

I've been burned by another product development company/individual, what now?

Hardware development is difficult. Large companies fail all the time in pursuits of new devices. Startups often underestimate the effort that is required to develop an embedded device. If you don't have a realistic expectation of what it will cost to develop your device, lower tier engineering companies will look appealing when getting intitial bids. This approach is often fatal to many startups. Paragon is not the cheapest option for development you will find. We are not a fly-by-night engineering service either. We are professionals and we have values. We care about our customers and that they get what they pay for. We also care about getting your product to market and yearn for the opportunity to do something new. You get what you pay for is true in nearly everything in life but in hardware development it is unconditional.

I'm ready to develop my product today, what's next?

That's easy, contact Paragon. We can either take requirements that you've already drawn up and build your device to those specifications or work with you to develop those specfications if you do not have a lot of experience putting together specs. Reach out to us, we are eager to help.
